What the route covers
The tour runs 1 hour 30 minutes and is rated easy. It climbs through Funchal’s hillside streets to the Botanical Garden, laid out on the Bom Sucesso estate that the Reid family bought in 1881 and opened as a garden in 1960. The grounds cover roughly 80,000 square metres of tropical and subtropical planting and hold a natural history museum. Your guide gives you time to walk the gardens at your own pace.

The way back down runs through the historic centre, past the Sé cathedral, begun in the 1490s, and the Municipal Square with the city hall and the former Jesuit college on it.
