If you are booking a car for two drivers, the same experience and age requirements apply to the second driver. The second driver’s driving licence and passport or ID will also be required for the paperwork.

Local regulations do not differ significantly from those in the rest of Europe, but there are some particularities. One of the most important is that some drivers may not always follow traffic rules. Of course, we do not recommend following their example. Traffic police actively monitor road conditions and enforce the law.

Typical Speed limits in Madeira Island:

  • 50 km/h in urban areas
  • 90 km/h outside urban areas
  • 100 km/h on expressways (90 km/h in rainy conditions)
Drivers must use daytime running lights in tunnels, in low visibility conditions, and always on expressways (Vias Rápidas).
Expressways are roads reserved exclusively for cars and motorcycles.
All car occupants must wear their seat belts.
Children under 12 years of age and less than 135cm tall may only ride in the rear seat in a child restraint system.
Do not talk on your mobile phone without a hands-free system.
The permitted blood alcohol content is 0.49‰. (Go easy on the poncha.)
