Diving with Stingrays

About this experience

Diving with stingrays in Madeira is a rare opportunity, and this is one of the few places on the island where you can do it with a marine biologist by your side. The experience is run by Scorpio Madeira Diving Center, a team known for pairing serious science with genuinely memorable dives.

You enter the water directly from the shore at one of Madeira’s most biodiverse dive sites, where large stingrays regularly patrol the sandy seabed and volcanic rock platforms. These animals can exceed one meter across, and they move through this environment on their own terms, which is exactly what makes spotting them so rewarding.

Guided Stingray Diving in Madeira With a Marine Biologist

Before you even get in the water, your guide, a specialist in rays and sharks, runs a detailed briefing on stingray behavior, habitat, safety, and how to observe them without disturbing them. The dive itself is calm and shallow, well suited to taking your time and paying attention. Stingrays glide across the seabed, settle into sandy patches, or approach divers out of curiosity.

Once you surface, the session continues. Your biologist holds a post-dive debrief covering what you observed and why the site matters ecologically. It is the kind of context that turns a great dive into something you actually remember.

Stingray Guarantee

If no stingrays are spotted during your dive, Scorpio Madeira Diving Center will take you out for a second dive at no extra cost, completely free of charge.

This is not just a dive it’s a scientific wildlife encounter, safe, educational, and unforgettable.
