Caldeirão Verde Levada Walk from Queimadas

About this experience

The Caldeirão Verde levada walk starts at Queimadas, 980 metres up in the Santana council, and runs deep into Madeira’s ancient Laurissilva forest. Over 6.5 kilometres each way (13 km round trip), the path follows the levada past a constant wall of green before arriving at the Caldeirão Verde waterfall, which drops from high above into a small lagoon. If you can face the cold water, you can swim under it.

What the walk is like

This is a moderate route with real character: several tunnels punctuate the trail, so a flashlight is strongly advised, and a few open stretches are not ideal for anyone with serious vertigo. Back at Queimadas you finish beside a traditional thatched Santana house. Madeira’s microclimates can flip the forecast within a day up here, so pack warm layers whatever the morning looks like.

What is handled for you

The operator, MadeiraEcoHolidays, includes a mountain guide, insurance and licences, half a litre of water per person, and transport from your accommodation. They state that transfers run in a private, fully electric vehicle, with roughly an hour’s drive from Funchal to Queimadas each way. Booking through Eversoul, your spot is confirmed with the operator and the day arrives pre-organised.
