The levada walk from Rabaçal to 25 Fontes is the one most visitors to Madeira have heard of before they land, and it earns the reputation. The trail follows an old irrigation channel through dense green forest, crossing small streams and passing minor waterfalls on the way to the main event: the 25 Fontes waterfall, named for the twenty-five springs that spill down its cliff face into a cold natural pool.
What the walk is like
The path is well maintained and much of it runs gently along the levada, though a few steeper sections ask for careful footing. At the pool you can stop for photos, a rest, or a very bracing dip. The water is genuinely cold, so consider yourself warned. The return follows the same route back and tends to feel quicker.
