About this tour
Drive deep into Madeira’s UNESCO-protected Laurissilva forest in an off-road buggy, exploring mountain ridges and ancient greenery. Enjoy views over Machico, Pico do Arieiro and Porto Santo, finishing in the water pools of the final stretch. It’s one of the island’s buggy tours in Madeira, marked out by the water pools that close its final off-road stretch.
Água de Pena – Briefing & departure; Welcome at the Água de Pena base. Helmet, gloves and safety briefing, then we roll out.
Ribeira de Machico: About 20 minutes to the first stop at ribeira de Machico, viewpoint over the first city in Madeira, with a short take on its history and culture. 10-minute stop.
Into the Laurissilva: Start of the off-road leg on one of the island main trails, inside the UNESCO Laurissilva forest. Endemic plants and animals along the way.
Casa das Funduras: After 30 minutes on dirt, a refresh stop with spring water produced by the volcanic rock itself. View of Pico do Arieiro, one of Madeira highest peaks.
Boca das Voltas: Another 20 minutes to the best viewpoint of the tour: out over the vast Atlantic and, on a clear day, the golden island of Porto Santo.
Water pools & northern village: Final off-road stretch, fun splashing through the water pools. View over the first northern village of the island and the distillery where the only true Madeira aguardente is produced.
Return via Santo da Serra: 15 minutes through Santo da Serra back to base. Tour done.
