There is one kart track on the island, so the choice is not where to drive but which format to book. The circuit sits in the Água de Pena Sports Park at Machico, tucked beneath the runway of Cristiano Ronaldo Airport, which is why it runs whatever the weather is doing. It is 400 metres long and five to seven metres wide, driven on RIMO karts with 270cc Honda engines, and the layout is rebuilt from time to time using movable barriers, so a second visit is not the same lap twice.

Rental is the simplest way in: free driving, sold per person in ten minute blocks, at €13 for 10 minutes, €23 for 20 and €34 for 30. No group to assemble and no format to organise, which suits a couple of drivers or an hour spare between other plans. Ten minutes is the entry price rather than the sensible one, so if you have driven out to Machico for this, the twenty minute block usually earns its extra.

The race formats are for a group with something to settle. Each adds a five minute practice run before the clock starts, and each needs a minimum of five drivers. Race 1 is that practice plus a single ten minute race at €22 per person. Race 2 adds a second ten minute race at €30. A group race format runs at €30 per person, and larger or custom formats are quoted on request.

One thing worth settling before you plan a family day around it: children can drive alone from seven in the junior karts, and a two seater lets an adult take a smaller child around, but the timed races are adults only. Race 1 and Race 2 are not permitted for those under 18 years of age.

Ilha das Aves is open every day of the year, with hours that shift slightly between seasons. In summer, the park runs from 10:00 to 19:00. In winter, it opens a little later and closes a little earlier, from 09:00 to 18:00. Either way, a full visit takes around three hours at a relaxed pace — long enough to walk the whole route, feed the koi and birds without rushing, and stop at the café partway through. That three-hour window is worth building into your day's schedule if you are combining the park with anything else on the south coast, since it is easy to underestimate how much time the feeding and photo stops add on top of simply walking the path.
